That's because you're not adding back 20% of what you get at your wheels, you're adding back 20% of the total power produced. Example: Let's say you had a Z with a 600 hp engine. With a 20% drivetrain loss, you'd be losing 120 hp. 600 - 120= 480. If you take 480, how do you get back to 600? If you multiply 480 x 1.20 you get 576. But if you divide 480 by .80 you get 600. To do the reverse, multiply 600 by .80. You get 480. Works out so nicely.
